Stella Grigor McGarvey is a Scottish, London-based artist whose practice is rooted in the materials and processes of analogue photography. Treating exposure as a process that unfolds over time and printing as a continuation of the image-making, the meaning of a photograph becomes inseparable from the physical labour behind it.

Selective dodging and burning become intuitive tools of emphasis and erasure, ways of shaping meaning through touch, timing, and pressure rather than through a fixed final image. The resulting photographs are suspended outside of narrative.

Her recurring subjects; chairs, cinema seats, churches, curtains and empty corners, are quiet and commonplace but charged with presence. Rather than offering conclusions they pose questions as they stand in for absent bodies and hauntings.
